Home : Q&A : Floors : Flagstone look using paper?

Name: LPAUL Title of Question: Flagstone look using paper?
Question: I have heard before of people tearing butcher paper into sections, layering on the concrete slab, and covering with polyurethane. I have heard that it turns out gorgeous...looks just like flagstone. Has anyone heard anything else like this?? Or how to do it???

Answer: I just read about this technique in "New Decorating book", (1981 BH&G) Using heavy brown wrapping paper, ordinary white glue and polyurethane varnish. 1) clean floor throughly, patch all cracks 2)tear brown wrapping paper into irregular shapes, making them look as much like flagstone as possible. vary sizes. Important!! don't use scissors. 3)combine white glue and water in equal parts. brush or roll the mixture onto one side of the paper. place your "stones" on the floor making sure the shapes are overlapping and the floor is covered completely 4)smooth out any wrinkles using a rolling or a wall paper seam roller 5)to protect the pretend flagstone, finish floor with four or five coats of poly varnish. let each coat dry over night before applying the next. building up the top coat takes time but is sure to last Good Luck!!

Answer: My best friend has covered her concrete floor with the brown paper, using wallpaper paste underneath. However, after 3 coats of the polyeurethene...it is still fragile. A fan fell over onto the floor and tore the paper....any ideas? sc1698@att.com
