I always have my clients begin by starting what I refer to as a memory/wish board. What you would do is collect data, pictures, color and fabric swatches that are appealing to you. I always ask them to not limit their selections to just a few. Look through decorating magazines and make notations on what you specifically like about the room. Example the color or furnishings. Add these photos and the notes to the board. Be sure to have the rooms dimensions. Include the window and door sizes along with dooor openings. If possible, draw a diagram of the room. Take the information gathered with you when you shop so as to not make choices that are not appropriate for the room. Do you have a specific theme or style that you are attracted to? Will you be purchasing new pieces of furniture or incorporating your existing pieces into the decorating plan? |

There is an abundance of information on the web. Simply type in budget decorating and enjoy what is being said. Take from this info ideas that are appealing to you. In doing so you can create a warm inviting home on a budget. My type of decoarting as I truly believ that one mans trash is another mans treasures. For a professional consultant at the rate of atleast $250 for one hour you can locate one in your yellow pages under decorators/consultants.
I do consults for $150 and charge a set dollar amount for a total room redo, using what one already has. This allows me to repurpose things that may not be what they are intended for but what suits the needs of the family. Good luck.

Start with photos of magazines and pull out rooms you are drawn to. Try to find the common element of all the photos that you prefer. while the rooms may have different colors, are they all casual or formal or are you drawn to the same colors each time? That will help to give you a starting point. And I save my magazines, because first you will notice just the overall room, but as you start adding accessories, table, lighting and art, you can keep reviewing the photos for those elements in the room to see what appeals to you.
Visit furniture stores for inspiration as well.
