One or two average size pieces can be better than many small things. Be sure you have good lighting throughout the room. Dark corners will make the room look smaller. Hang curtains at ceiling level. Consider end tables that have storage, with shelves or drawers to store extra items. A glass coffee table gives a "see thru" effect and will look less bulky. Furniture and walls of similar colors will provide less contrast and allow the eye to flow around the room.
