   Home : Q&A : Kitchen : Kitchen Cabinet colors

Name: iris Title of Question: Kitchen Cabinet colors
Question: My daughter just purchased a 1950 modest, small cape cod style home. It needs much renovation, including the kitchen. She has been looking at kitchen cabinets and want to purchase a very dark garnet colored cabinet. The color is analogous to a very deep cherry. I think this is a big mistake as the kitchen is quite small, with enough room for cooking but not eating. I also think the color is not in keeping with the character of the house as it is very formal and traditional. Can you give me your opinion on this. Many thanks.

Answer: Even though your daughters home is of Cape Cod style she could decorate it in a formal/traditional style as long as she is repetative in the design. You mentioned that the kitchen was fairly small. What are the dimensions including the ceiling height and how is the natural lighting? I often find that my clients tend to tire of darker colored cabinets and other furniture pieces quicker that lighter colored ones. I personally choose medium toned pieces to decorate with. I feel more styles go with this tone.

Answer: I agree it's not in keeping with the casual cape cod style, but it's her choice, so let's help her do it right. If she installs recessed ceiling lights and undercabinet lights it will brighten up the room, especially at night, when unlit corners produce ugly shadows. Also if she can afford to have the cabinet go all the way to the ceiling with no soffit, it will also help that closed in feeling. Light color paint colors will add to the brightness. What will she put on the floor?
