Question: My house was built in 1954 and has an old sandstone fireplace wich looks dirty and outdated. I hate to paint the stone as it will last forever. Can I make a cover over the stone? Please help with suggestions. Thank you.

Answer: You may try some slate and stone cleaner. It's available at Home Depot. I use it to clean slate and to remove grout glaze. Test it in a small area as inconspicous as possible. It may take a fair amount of elbow grease, but if it works, I bet it will look stunning. I also used some OxiClean to clean up a stain in the mortar and bricks of my fireplace hearth. You could try taht too. You may also call a chimney sweep and repair company. They may be able to do it for you.
