   Home : Q&A : Dens : PAINTING PANELING

Name: Dolly Title of Question: PAINTING PANELING
Question: I have inexpensive wood paneling, I want to paint it as it is dark and the room is small. We use if for a small den. I would like a light and airy room in white or cream. I would like to try glazing it for texture and to take away from the painted panel look.

Answer: Dolly, you need to be careful when painting over paneling. At a minimum, I would rough it up(sand it - to remove any sheen) and oil prime it. Try it first in a small area, if it sticks you should be Ok. Good luck.

Answer: I HAVE PAINTED PANELING IN OUR BASEMENT AS IT TO WAS VERY DARK AND DREARY. I NOW LOOKS LIKE A WHITE PAINTED BARN. I LOVE IT AND IT HAS BRIGHTENED UP THE BASEMENT SO MUCH. MY PANELING WAS NOT A SHINNY FINISH. IT WAS VERY ROUGH. I PUT PRIMER ON IT AFTER CLEANING AND THEN APPLIED 2 COATS OF PAINT. AFTER 2 YEARS I HAVE NOTICED THAT IT COULD USE ANOTHER COAT OF PAINT BUT I AM COMPLETLY SATISFIED.
