Home : Q&A : Kitchen : Toning down kitchen cabinets

Name: Candie Title of Question: Toning down kitchen cabinets
Question: I have golden or honey oak cabinets in my kitchen. I'd like to paint the walls a color that will help the cabinets blend in and not stand out like a sore thumb. What color should I be considering to help the cabinets blend in.

Answer: My daughter has similiar colored cabinets. she used Benjamin Moore "chocolate Mousse" on the walls with accents of green and gold accessories. It looks very pretty.

Answer: I would suggest a wheat, straw or caramel color. Either will blend with your cabinetry. Question? Why do you want them to blend in? Do you not like the finish? Typically one would use a color that would enhance the finish. What colors and style do you prefer?

Answer: Another consideration is, if it's the color of the cabinets you don't like you could paint those instead. I have an older custom oak built in wall unit(some open shelves and some closed cabinets) in our family room that was all stained a medium brown color, as that was the style when they were installed. We just had the whole thing painted an off white and I installed new black pulls on the doors. It looks very up to date now. We used the color "indian White" by Benjamin Moore. It's a soft off white color. The color is similiar to my kitchen cabinets which are in the adjacent room. If you try to paint the walls when it's really the cabinets you don't like, you might not be happy anyway. I would change the element you dislike and then find a color you love for the walls. If you paint the cabinets an off white color, then you could paint the walls "soft fern" or "silver sage" or "tree moss". Or you could go with a soft yellow like "oriental silk" or an earthy cocoa color. Our painter took the doors off to make painting them easier. Then painted the entire frame. He added "wilbond" to the paint and lightly sanded the doors between coats. It took 20 years off the perceived age of the room.

Answer: I don't really want them to blend in, but I don't want them jumping off the walls. I have considered painting the cabinets, but my husband and I can't agree on a color. I bought samples of Benjamin Moore Sienna Spice and Chocolate Mousee to see if I like either one of those. I really do appreciate everyone's comments and would love any other suggestions. P.S. What is "wilbond"?

Answer: I'm not sure what "willbond" is , maybe an additive. I just know the painter mentioned it. Ask at a local paint store about it. I know three people that have painted their cabinets and were happy with the results. Almost every show on HGTV related to inexpensively fixing up and modernizing cabinets, they paint the cabinets. I don;t know what the rest of your rooms are in terms of furnishings, style or colors. You could paint the cabinets almost any color you like, red, green, denim blue, white, off white and even black. Adding tile to the backsplash will also update the room. Keep the existing colortop in mind (unless you're replacing them) when choosing the cabinet color and don't forget to update the hardware. You didn't emention what color the countertop is and what your floor is.
