Question: I plan to replace my kitchen counters with granite and floors with tile. My cabinets are white and I would like for the area to remain light using neutral tones. What colors would you suggest for replacing tile and counters. |

I would look for a granite with a light pearl neutral background with flecks of darker colors like, ivory, brown and black. I think a wood floor would look best with your white cabinets but maybe you could use a tile in an ivory color you could have it installed on the diagonal and at every corner of a group of four tiles they could clip the corner of the tile add a "key" in black granite. A key is a small (about 3 or 4 inch) square that they put in the clipped corner area. I wouldn;t do this on EVERY corner, just at the corner of a group of 4 tiles. I assume your using at least 8 x 8 or larger tiles for this effect. Using too many "keys" will make the floor busy. The right amount can just add some interest.
You will then have a very neutral kitchen and can jazz it up with the wall paint color or add an interesting tile backsplash. |

| Answer:
I like the idea of a neutral colored countertop but having something of the same colro depth on the floor with your white cabinetry may be too stark. I would lean more towards a hardwood floor. Some things to consider about ceramic tiles in the kitchen is that they can break easily as well as scratch. They are hard on the back and they are cold in the winter months. Of course you can add an area rug for softness and a heated floor below the tiles. Makes for a cozy floor on a cold winter morning. Just a thought. |
