Home : Q&A : Floors : color for wood floors in other areas when living room is paneled

Name: barbara Title of Question: color for wood floors in other areas when living room is paneled
Question: Our l.r. has a light carpet and medium pecan colored panelling (1980). We want to put wood floors in areas that join this room. We like a dark distressed bamboo flooring. My concern is the l.r. paneling. I don't want to have to re-do it.

Answer: You can paint the paneling. You need to use a good primer the first time to seal it and then you can paint. Tell the paint store what you want to do and they'll tell you the right primer to use. I've done this many times. you can paint the wall any color you like after it's primed and you only need to prime the first time. The paint store might recommend a light sanding to the paneling before priming and that's a good idea.
