I'd start by asking your teen what "theme" she would like to showcase in her bedroom, or if she has an "inspiration piece" from which she would like to select a color scheme, keeping in mind the things in the room that cannot be removed or changed, such as the bedding or existing carpet color. I agree with the others that you need to set some limits, especially when it comes to making changes that are irreversible, should you ever want to move. As far as using what you have, I have seen many decorating shows on TV where a teen has a hodge-podge of hand-me-down, mismatched wooden furniture, but with some sanding and painting everything in the same paint color, or complimentary colors, everything became instantaneously unified and looked absolutely wonderful. If you get HGTV on cable, they have lots of great shows from which to draw inspiration, such as "Decorating on a Dime" and "Decorating Cents". Media, Media, Media, Teens love magazines, tv and radio. Collect magazines then let them cut out their favorite people and pitures and place them on colored tag board. You can cut the tag board into shapes and put them all over the room. (kind of like large scale scrapbooking) (but when the trend fades it's easy to take down and inexpensive to make!!) also use things like streamers $1.99 for 3 rolls christmas lights mixed with a disco ball, be inventive.!! |

If your daughter is a talented artist let her paint her FOCAL wall in an abtsract, geometric or mural. Paint is by far the cheapest and easiest to re-do. Scatter some crazy mis-matched throw rugs in bright colors and pick bedding that is the most prominent color that has been used on the FOCAL wall. Just as an adult, your daughters style,theme and color preferances will change. By allowing her to have some say in the roomd decorating will make her more appreciative. |

That all really depends on her personality. One good idea, if she is a punk rocker, is, get some card board about as big as your daughter. Have her pose with a hair brush or something like she is rocking out, make her hair look cool and then trace her body. Then cut out the shapes and paint them and put them around her room. |
