   Home : Q&A : Family rooms : decorating basement

Name: Darlene Title of Question: decorating basement
Question: I have an unfinished 32x16 unfinished basement. My husband and I are trying to come up with a really nice look/layout for the basement before we begin. We will be putting in a wood stove, a bar, a large entertainment t.v. and a pool table. Any thoughts on a layout. Color ideas for the walls on a floor plan would be great too! Thanks so much for replying! Darlene

Answer: Boy, do we have the same house? We're doing the same thing-it is taking time as it doesn't come cheap. I painted the cement walls right away because we're using the basement now even with it unfinished. Our TV/sitting area is layed out around the woodstove area, with the furniture angled to view the fireplace and the TV. Our pool table will be behind the furniture in its own 'area' but still able to view the TV/fireplace. We're also putting a bar in that area as well as a dart board, a small bar table looking out the larger basement window. On the other end of the basement I've left room for another den (egress is plenty so one can sleep in this area), bathroom and in the furnace/water heater area, a pantry room. The pantry room can also have a wall with an opening in it, with shutters so you can use this for crafts, laundry etc. When you want to close off that room, just close the shutters. We have a little larger area than you so we are able to make room for excersise space. Hope this helps you get started with ideas.
