Question: We have a a formal dining room in our new home. There is a fireplace & mantel that sticks out about 15 inches from the wall it is on. It also has a mirror framed in wood that matches the mantel that runs from the mantel to the ceiling. The floor in front of the fireplace has black marble. The fireplace is in the middle of a wall and has french doors to the right about three feet from it and a large window on the outside wall about 3 feet to the left of it. This makes for a corner of "wasted" space according to my husband. He is proposing building shelves in the corner would this be distracting as the fireplace is the main focal point of the room? Across the room from the fireplace is another set of french doors leading to the family room. We have a crockery collection he thinks should be displayed on the shelves.
