How high should I hang my artwork?

As a general rule of thumb, most art pieces should be hung at eye level. Of course, eye level is different for different people. So try this suggestion, hang the center of the art piece approximately 60 inches from the floor. If your family is taller than average, you might want to raise it a little, but do not get carried away! A key or important piece of art to be hung over a sofa or furniture piece should be approximately two thirds the width of the lower item, and hung approximately 5-10inches above the furniture. The height of the lower furniture will dictate the ultimate height, keeping that eye level rule in mind. There are always exceptions, for example: I have a brass headboard in my master bedroom, which is tall and has a center peak. The artwork hung over it, is certainly higher than 60", but the space between the headboard and bottom of art is about 4". Remember these are just guidelines, but hopefully this will keep you hanging your art in right area (give or take a little). In my workbook, "Secrets to a Beautiful Home" I try to provide you with practical ideas and information that will save you money on artwork and tips to make the most of what you have. Have a good time with art in your home, it’s an element of decorating that reflects your taste and style.
