Let's Look Up!

Do you need more space--a spare room for children, study, games, guest, hobbies etc.? Or you would you like to add volume, height and space to existing rooms in your home? The space your looking for may be right above your head. Height, volume and unused square footage may be there, and you don’t have to do a major remodel to utilize it. Many homes have unused attics that can be converted into the perfect space for the above mentioned needs. Going up rather than out cant be an efficient way to remodel.

If you want to consider removing the standard ceiling and creating a vault, first determine if the attic is tall enough for you to be able to add at least three or four feet in height to the room below. If you gain any less height, it probably will not be worth the expense.

If you want to consider the attic space for an individual room, you will need to determine if the attics height is sufficient for comfortable headroom in most areas. Is there an adequate way to access the attic, or can one be easily created. There will probably be some electrical and other mechanical needs, but remember the square footage is already there, so the cost will be much less to finish this space over adding new square footage.

If the attic has been used for gas or electrical service lines to the main house for heating or cooling systems, make sure the services can be relocated easily.

Remember scale and proportion. Tall pieces of furniture work well on walls with cathedral ceilings adding visual height and a focal point to the room with new vaulted ceilings.-- It’s also important not to cram every piece of spare furniture into the new room in the attic. Work with the heights and angles to best utilize the space for your family. Have fun with this new space and please no arguments on who gets to use it!
