A Tropical Twist

If you’re dreaming about letting the sunshine and fresh air in your home, you must be thinking about the essence of a Key West style. It’s called open-air living and is based on 19th century furniture and art from the days when Key West was a wealthy port. The outdoors and indoors blend for living and entertaining. This lifestyle and décor is perfect for many parts of our beautiful country. It allows for extended living space, beyond the main rooms. A covered porch or lanai extending from the living/family-rooms/kitchens, dinettes, dining rooms or master bedrooms creates this fabulous tropical feel.

The covered porch should be treated and decorated as an extension of these spaces, with coordinating colors and patterns. Flooring should flow well from the main areas, avoiding a severe division of color, if possible. Bifold french doors, or disappearing sliding glass doors that open onto the covered porch or lanai will maximize the floor space.

Furnishings are a mix of traditional woods with bamboo, rattan, and wicker –(an interpretation of British Colonial) decorating are the most popular. However, in many climates, a practical finish and durable fabrics are desirable for these areas and should be considered. Outdoor furniture has evolved into wonderful designs and colors that will blend into the Key West style beautifully.

Ceiling fans keep the air stirring- a tropical garden and lots of plants will enhance the setting and open-air living. Relax and enjoy!
