Storage Savvy

In our kitchens, keeping pots, cans, knives, and knickknacks under control takes more than resolve; it takes a place for everything. Here are a few storage tips that will provide space and added décor at the same time.

  1. Consider dual use furniture. For example: A built-in bench that seats your family at the dinner table and provides storage for bulky items at the same time. Chairs would seat the family, but provide no storage.

  2. Be creative with small spaces. Look around your kitchen; a space as narrow as 4 inches makes room enough for a row of cans or extra cleaning items.

  3. Store and display at the same time. A collection of antique plates can be displayed in a nook above a refrigerator. An open shelf can house a collection of teapots or cookbooks. Cabinetry often offers good-looking display cubbyholes for a wine collection.

  4. Store with creativity. Rustic baskets stacked on a countertop or nestled on open shelves offer storage for everything from towels to tea bags.
