Lets Mix It Up!
Solids can be stylish, but patterns add excitement! When you increase the patterns used in one room, the effect can be fantastic. Pair checks with stripes, plaids with dots and florals with geometrics. Any way you mix it, the result should add elegance, charm, personality and a personal sense of style. Here are some decorator tricks to help you mix patterns.
Keep colors in the same intensity. If you choose two patterns in pastel shades, don’t add a jewel tone.
Mix and balance patterns all around the room rather than keeping them in one area. This tip needs to apply to all colors and fabrics.
As a general rule mix patterns in similar scales, however you can mix different scales, but don’t overdo it. For example: Use a large plaid on a large piece of furniture, add a print of similar scale and accent with smaller checks.
Textures like chenille’s, velvet, corduroys etc. can make interesting patterns and add personality to the mix.
Coordinated accessories can also add touches of pattern to the mix. They add color repetition and will create a rhythm of pattern in color, placement or design.
