How to design for Preschoolers

  1. When possible, make the family room part of the kitchen or visible from the kitchen. Sometimes this is not possible, due to the floorplan of your existing home. However, if you will be building or buying a new home in the future, consider the above configuration. Children usually want to be in the same room as their parents and it’s easier to keep an eye on them.

  2. Plan space for a dining table and chairs that is practical and comfortable for children. Besides providing a place for snacks and games, the table will be practical for projects and homework when the children get older. For example: Choose carefree flooring for this area and fabrics that are durable.

  3. Choose safe, sturdy, durable furniture. Make sure tables have rounded corners and chairs are sturdy enough for climbing. Save glass tables and fragile furnishings for other rooms in the house.

  4. Use large baskets or slide-front toy boxes for storage. Top hinged toy chest can pinch little fingers and be too heavy to lift easily. Bright colored, plastic storage baskets are available just about everywhere. They are perfect for children’s belongings and add color too!!

  5. Use a soft, easy to clean rug or comfortable carpet for the floor. Be cautious of slippery floor finishes, such as slick finished tiles and avoid sisal or abrasive fiber rugs. They are very rough of little knees.
