Let's Get Cozy

Creating a cozy atmosphere in our homes provides a comfortable safe haven from the fast pace we get caught in.  Slowing down and unwinding in our cozy, snug homes gives us a sense of calm and relaxation we can’t get any other place.  If you would like to create a cozier ambience in your home, you will find the below tips and ideas helpful.

Establish a warm color scheme for your home.  Combine a dominant color or pattern with three or more other fabrics.  The Decorator Secrets Color Guides are a good example of how to mix patterns and colors in the same room.   You can certainly use cool colors, just complement them with warmer ones.  For example: Blue (cool), add terra cotta and gold (warm)

Create a cozy atmosphere with decorative false beams.  They can be stained a rich wood grain or whitewashed, for the lightest look.

Create a sumptuous atmosphere with your upholstery.  Use texture liberally, and tone-on-tone fabrics.  Choose fabrics that feel good to the touch—such as velvet, chenille’s, linen blends etc.

Layer skirts over an inexpensive plywood table.

Light your rooms with lamps, picture lights, torchiers and candles instead of recessed or overhead lighting.  Create cozy reading spots to capture the mood.  Consider a light bulb with a subtle color, such as the glow of a pink bulb.

Decorate with photographs, books, magazines, collections, and mementos that reflect your families’ interest and tell about your family.

Use accessories in different ways- bowls with fruit, pine cones, nuts, yarn, potpourri, marbles, candy etc. on coffee tables, books stacked on shelves and table tops, use the books as small pedestal for items such as a beautiful cup and saucer.

Hang mirrors for light reflection and to use in wall groupings.  They will add sparkle and the reflected images will inhance the cozy feel you are after.

Use small chairs, benches, stools, and ottomans wherever you can.  They provide a special touch of friendliness and comfort.
